Nigeria’s Security Tracker – August 2020

In the month of August 2020, the Nigeria security posture is still tense. This report shows violent incidents related to political, economic, and social grievances directed at the state or other affiliative groups (or conversely the state employing violence to respond to those incidents).

August 1: Eighteen civilians were killed by Boko Haram in Mayo-Moskota, Cameroon.

August 2: Three kidnappers were killed in Etche, Rivers by officers of the Nigerian police force. Cultists killed five in Akpabuyo, Cross River. Boko Haram suicide bomber killed two in Konduga, Borno.

August 3: One protestor was killed by police officers in Isoko North, Delta. In Nassarawa Egon, Nassarawa, one journalist and one other were killed by gunmen.

August 4: In Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa six pirates were killed by Nigerian troops.

August 5: Four were killed at a church during an attack by gunmen in Yenegoa, Bayelsa. Fulani killed thirty-three in Zangon Kataf, Kaduna.

August 6: Ten bandits were killed by police officers in Batsari, Katsina. Nigerian troops another killed ten bandits in Dutsinma, Katsina.

August 8: Five civilians were killed by gunmen in Tai, Rivers.

August 9: Bandits abducted five women in Kurfi, Katsina.

August 10:  Violence during a protest in Oye, Ekiti resulted in the death of three persons. Gunmen killed thirteen civilians in Apa, Benue. Boko Haram killed thirteen civilians in Magumeri, Borno. Five soldiers were killed by Boko Haram in Kukawa, Borno.

August 11: Military airstrikes killed ten Boko Haram militants in Bama, Borno.

August 12: Fifteen civilians were killed by gunmen in Mariga, Niger state. Military airstrikes killed ten ISWA militants in Ngala, Borno. Gunmen killed one and kidnapped two in Faskari, Katsina.

August 13: Gunmen killed a Bauchi assembly member and kidnapped two wives and one child in Dass, Bauchi. Ten bandits were killed by the Nigerian air force in Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna.

August 15: Kidnappers abducted a Yobe community leader in Fune, Yobe. Boko Haram killed three soldiers in Ngala, Borno. Nigerian troops killed three arms smugglers in Sabon Birni, Sokoto.

August 16: Airstrikes killed ten Boko Haram militants in Marte, Borno and another ten Boko Haram militants in Dikwa, Borno. Nigerian troops killed three bandits in Zurmi, Zamfara.  Fulani militia killed four in Kachia, Kaduna and another four were killed with one abducted in Kajuru, Kaduna.

August 17: Two soldiers, one civilian, and ten Boko Haram militants were killed during an attack in Magumeri, Borno. Kidnappers abducted two foreigners in Rafi, Niger state and subsequently killed one of them. Three Nigerian soldiers, nine civilians, and five bandits were killed during a clash in Rafi, Niger state. Nigerian troops killed ten Boko Haram militants in Marte, Borno and twenty ISWA commanders in Bama, Borno.

August 18: Three soldiers and eight Boko Haram militants were killed during a clash in which Boko Haram also kidnapped one hundred civilians in Kukawa, Borno. Fulani militia killed two in Zangon Kataf, Kaduna.

August 19: The Nigerian Air Force killed ten Boko Haram militants in Ngala, Borno. Gunmen killed seven in Nembe, Bayelsa.

August 20: Sectarian violence led to three deaths in Gassol, Taraba.
